About Gramercy
Gramercy is a quiet, green neighbourhood that carries itself with classic bearing. A couple blocks north lies the park that gives the neighbourhood its name; a little ways further are Madison Square Park and Union Square, destinations themselves for dining and people watching. And with the 6 subway line at 23rd Street nearby, you’ll find connections around the city are quite easily made.
At the heart of the neighborhood is the famous Gramercy Park: a gated, two-acre green space that is the be- and end-all in exclusivity. Access to the park is solely possible with a key (the 383 in circulation are only bestowed on those living in the park’s direct periphery), which unlocks any of the four gates surrounding it.
For those unfortunate enough to not live in the vicinity, the park and its beautiful contents, which includes ‘Janey Waney’, a large Alexander Calder statue on permanent loan, are visible from a pedestrian friendly perimeter, albeit through the wrought-iron gates.
There’s also the trellised rooftop terrace of the adjacent Gramercy Park Hotel, where visitors can partake in food and cocktails 17 storeys above the prestigious locale.
Ultimately, this residential area is a peek into what a certain slice of bourgeois living might have been in the past – and might be today.
