The Space

This lovely and beautifully decorated one-bedroom apartment occupies part of a private brownstone building on the rive droite (the north bank of the Seine), in the 16th arrondissement. Please see our Eiffel Tower-Alma description for its sister unit, a much larger apartment in which you can house the rest of the crew who are joining you. But this place is for you.

Cozy yet tasteful, everything is spotlessly arranged in utmost taste and elegance. The salon features a comfy velvet couch, side dining table, and loads of objets d'art to warm the senses. The beautifully renovated kitchen is fully equipped and gleaming, ready to help you enjoy your morning croissant and coffee as well as those beautiful fromages and saucissons you picked up for your afternoon apéros.

The bedroom is laid out in charming luxury, with the finest linens and a desk on which to pen your musings to loved ones back home. The bath, also spotless and finished in lovely tile and marble, will make you wonder why you never took more baths at home.

But then, you are at home. This place will make you feel special, and at the same time, like you've always belonged here.

The ancient Greeks believed that four elements – earth, water, fire and air – comprised all meaning, and went so far as to devise a medical system around these, calling them in some contexts 'the humors.' Many philosophers took up the hue and cry of the four elements, as did artists throughout the centuries. Frank Lloyd Wright constantly sought an expression and balance of the four essential elements in his houses, notably in his magnum opus, FallingWater. Paris, too, in its love affair with ancient wisdom, bears these symbols proudly and consciously, starting with its glistening necklace of water and its moniker, the City of Light. The delicate northerly air of Paris is almost a living presence, as in winter it can be rose-hued and in summer nearly turquoise; and earth is expressed in its parks, hills, and buildings, which are of a piece with the local terre.

This sweet and utterly Parisian apartment, centrally located in the 16th arrondissement, is a minute's walk from the Seine, and also from the Flame of the Statue of Liberty, a public sculpture ringing out luminosity in gold tones in the Place d'Alma, at one end of the Pont (bridge) d'Alma over the river. You furthermore need only to lift your eyes to see, blazing in an earthier kind of glory, the Eiffel Tower, which, every evening at sunset, becomes a marvel of light. This is iconic, elemental Paris, and as locations go, you could hardly pick a more central one from which to see it all.

Icons and public squares aside, there's the even more essential element of home about this place, which is located in a private brownstone and decorated in a charmingly personal and très français style. It's a perfect nest to return to after a long day of shopping, sightseeing, Métro riding, and connoitering in French. You'll enjoy bringing back your treasures and delicacies from the boutiques and markets, along with stories and memories to last until your next visit: the lovely evening promenade you took along the classical edge of the Louvre and the Bourse… the Grand Palais and Petit Palais… the American Cathedral… the Plaza Athenée Hotel. You'll feel washed in all the elements and sensory experiences of Paris. Surely it's enough to give you a new outlook, if not, outright, a new lease on life.

The Neighborhood

With its ornate 19th century buildings, large avenues, prestigious schools, museums and various parks, the 16th arrondissement has long been known as one of French high society's favorite places of residence (comparable to New York's Upper East Side or London's Kensington and Chelsea) to such an extent that the phrase "le 16e" (French pronunciation: [lə sɛzjɛm]) has been associated with great wealth in French popular culture. Indeed, the 16th arrondissement is France's fourth richest district for average household income, following the 8th, 7th and 6th arrondissements; with the south of the 17th arrondissement and Neuilly-sur-Seine, they form the most affluent and prestigious residential area in France.

The 16th arrondissement hosts several large sporting venues, including: the Parc des Princes, which is the stadium where Paris Saint-Germain football club plays its home matches; Roland Garros Stadium, where the French Open tennis championships are held; and Stade Jean-Bouin, home to the Stade Français rugby union club. The Bois de Boulogne, the second-largest public park in Paris (behind only the Bois de Vincennes), is also located in this arrondissement.
