The Neighbourhood
You’re about 5 minutes from the Bayswater Road which runs along the northern edge of Hyde Park. Hyde Park is home to Kensington Palace (former home of Lady Diana and current home of Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge), and the Diana Memorial fountain. You can enjoy swimming, boating, cycling, skating and the two cafés within its 142 hectares. There are pitches for team games, tennis courts, tracks for horse riding and a spectacular children’s playground.
It’s a picturesque stroll through Hyde Park to reach Green Park and Buckingham Palace. From there, you can cut across Green Park to take afternoon tea at the Ritz. Or walk on down the Mall or through St James Park to Horse Guards Parade, Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben) on the River Thames.
On Sundays, the stretch of the Bayswater Road alongside Hyde Park plays host to the Bayswater Road Sunday Art Exhibition, at which more than 250 artists exhibit original art on the Royal Park Railings between Lancaster Gate and Queensway tube stations every Sunday.
From there, continue along Bayswater Road towards Marble Arch to take in another London landmark, witness the spectacle of the orators in full flow at Speakers Corner, enjoy the Middle Eastern flavours of the restaurants along the Edgeware Road, or join the throngs on Oxford Street for some serious shopping!
In the other direction, the Bayswater Road will take you to Notting Hill (location of the Julia Roberts/ Hugh Grant film of the same name) and its fantastic local restaurants and bars, boutique shops, and the famous Portobello Road Market.
Further afield
You’re right in the heart of London (travel zone 1) here, so it’s a short underground ride to all of the sights and attractions for which London is renowned: Trafalgar Square, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House, the London Eye, Tate Modern, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Leicester Square, the Strand and Piccadilly Circus, Harrods, the Natural History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many other wonderful and historic locations are easily accessible (within a thirty minute underground journey).
Getting Around
Paddington Station is a three-minute walk away.
"Heathrow Express" and "Heathrow Connect" services link to and from London Heathrow Airport.
From here you can access mainline British Rail services across London and to the South-West of England & South Wales, plus London Underground Hammersmith & City, Bakerloo and Circle line services.
Paddington Station is something of a tourist attraction in its own right, having been designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1854 and also being the site where the Brown family met Paddington Bear in Michael Bond’s children’s stories.
The London Underground stations of Lancaster Gate (Circle line), Queensway (Central line) and Bayswater (Circle and District lines) are all within a ten minute walk of the apartment, giving you access to London’s network of rail services, transporting you anywhere across the capital.
If you are a first-time visitor to London but plan on using the Underground during your stay, I recommend you get an Oyster card for travel across the Underground network, local buses and the KPMG river taxis.
You can also use the Santander Cycle Hire public self-service bicycle sharing scheme for short journeys in and around central London (known locally as ‘Boris bikes’ after the London Mayor) to get around town – although it’s advisable to stick to the designated cycle routes if you’re new to the city. The nearest cycle hire station is located within Hyde Park, for the collection and deposit of hire bikes.
You can pay at the bicycle docking station with a credit or debit card and there is no usage charge for journeys of 30 minutes or under.
