The Space:
Built in 1923, this nice, rustic home is located on Detroit's "Lower East Side" near Grosse Pointe and less than 1 block from the water. Large private backyard (dog friendly), river access & great parks 1 minute walk away. Our block is part of the famous "Copper Canyon" and is known as one of Detroit's safest areas where lots of police officers live.
We are conveniently located only 5.5 miles to downtown (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike). Off-street parking is available.
The house also has a washer / dryer in the basement that guests will have access to.
Guest Access:
Guests have a fully-furnished private room with personal fridge, microwave & hot water kettle. Shared fully-equipped kitchen is available at all times. Shared upstairs bathroom features a large soaking tub and shared restroom downstairs is also available.
Interaction with Guests:
My wife and I currently live here and will be here to check you in when you arrive. We're both mid-30s, open minded, well-traveled, eclectic tech people. We enjoy traveling, cooking, food & wine, music, conversation, etc. We also love to meet new people and learn about cultures and cuisines from around the world.
The Neighborhood :
The home is conveniently located 5.5 miles east of downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike).
"Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) is a historic river-front neighborhood located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms.
WHY IS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IMPORTANT?
It was literally the birthplace of the automotive industry and marked the changeover from an agrarian horse-driven society to the modern industrial based urban world.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s this neighborhood was home to 3 of the region's most famous horse racing tracks. In 1901 the Detroit Driving Club held the first automobile race which featured the young Henry Ford who was the only man willing to race against the formidable Alexander Winton (a leading auto manufacturer). After a spectacular upset, Henry Ford won the race and with this demonstration, seeded the founding of the modern Ford Motor Company.
Between the years 1911 and 1919, Chalmers motorcars operated the world's first automotive test track here. Chalmers Street (named after the company) and East Jefferson Avenue intersect, and as such the neighborhood became known as "Jefferson Chalmers".
Our home is located along the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are just across the street from the water and you can throw a rock & hit the nearest canal from our backyard (but please don't do that haha). We are also within 1-2 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park.
Nearby you will find world-class fishing (musky), boat launch facilities, and many nice neighbors.
Getting Around:
Although bus service is available, we recommend driving a car during your stay in Detroit. Biking is also a good way to move around the city and we can arrange bikes for you to use during your stay if you'd like.
House Rules:
No smoking inside the home. Please clean up after yourself. Have fun & be respectful of others :-)
WHAT BROUGHT US HERE
After driving through Detroit in 2013 we fell in love with the city and its people so we decided to move here. Since 2013 we have been busy saving old houses, removing them from the "demo list" and helping to bring them back to life. We scouted literally every neighborhood in Detroit when we first arrived and we chose this particular neighborhood (Jefferson Chalmers) because of its rich history, great neighbors, and its outstanding natural resources. Convenient river access and proximity to nearby parks makes the location hard to beat and it's really one of the BEST and most under-valued neighborhoods in the city.
