THE SPACE
PRIVATE BEDROOM WITH A COMMUNITY VIBE
The house has multiple bedrooms upstairs that might be booked with other guests at any given time. Your bedroom is totally private and secure (with a digital door lock) with the bathroom, kitchen, and other parts of the home being shared. We love meeting people from all over and lots of friendships have started between guests who have met while staying in our home. With that being said, if you require more privacy, this is probably not the best place for you but most guests see it as a great way to meet people and embrace the community vibe as part of the adventure.
OUR HOUSE & OUR SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD
Built in 1923, this nice, rustic home is located on Detroit's "Lower East Side" near Grosse Pointe and less than 1 block from the water. Large private backyard, river access & great parks 1 minute walk away. Our block is part of the famous "Copper Canyon" and is known as one of Detroit's safest areas where many families and police officers live.
We are conveniently located 5.5 miles to downtown (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike). Off-street parking is available.
BIKES
Want to borrow a bike during your stay? Just let us know and you can borrow ours :-) Also if you happen to be here on a Monday, check out Slow Roll! It is an AWESOME community bike ride that takes place every Monday evening from late April to early September.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
CHECK YOURSELF IN & MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME
"Our house is your house" so be our guest to come and go as you wish like you are at home. We want our guests to have as much privacy and freedom as they wish so that's why we use self-check in. If you would like to meet us, send us a message! We're at the house most days and would be happy to chat and share a blended coffee together! :-)
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
LOCATION
The home is conveniently located 5.5 miles east of downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike).
"Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) is a historic river-front neighborhood located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms.
A RICH HISTORY: THE BIRTH OF THE AUTOMOBILE & PROHIBITION
Built in 1923, this home is part of an exciting history that we hope you will learn more about. Local history highlights include:
* During the “roaring 1920s” prohibition swept the country and alcohol was banned. The Fox Creek, located just behind the house, became a major channel for smuggling illegal booze from Canada. Legend has it this house was used as a speakeasy (secret bar) where people gathered for a drink.
* In 1905: Henry Ford raced through this neighborhood and proved his ability as an automotive pioneer which helped him get financing and launch the Ford motor company. The automotive industry was literally born here!
Our home is located along the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are just across the street from the water and you can throw a rock & hit the nearest canal from our backyard (but please don't do that haha). We are also within 1-2 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park.
FAST FORWARD TO TODAY
Since 2015, we’ve worked on this home continuously and we are excited to share it with you and fellow travelers. In a way, our home is just like the city of Detroit – it had a glorious past and went through some very tough times, but if you dig through the surface, it’s not hard to find its beauty. This charming home, like many others in Detroit, was abandoned and abused, and just needed to be re-discovered, re-invented and brought back to life…
WHAT BROUGHT US HERE
After driving through Detroit in 2013 we fell in love with the city and its people so we decided to move here. Since 2013 we have been busy saving old houses, removing them from the "demo list" and helping to bring them back to life. We scouted literally every neighborhood in Detroit when we first arrived and we chose this particular neighborhood (Jefferson Chalmers) because of its rich history, great neighbors, and its outstanding natural resources. This neighborhood is not the closest to downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car) but our convenient river access, proximity to nearby parks, and overall friendly and safe vibe makes this our favorite neighborhood in Detroit and we hope you will like it here too!
HELP US CONTINUE RESTORATION WORK
All proceeds from ROOMORAMA help us fund our continuing restoration work so each guest brings us one step closer to saving these awesome historic homes.
WE'RE HERE TO HELP
We hope our place serves as a great base for your Detroit adventures and we hope you enjoy your stay. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience here even better!
GETTING AROUND
Although bus service is available, we recommend driving a car during your stay in Detroit. Biking is also a good way to move around the city and we can arrange bikes for you to use during your stay if you'd like.
