Highlights of Kealakekua;
Place of Refuge What a gem! Pu'uhonua O Honaunau or Place of Refuge should be on the list of places to visit when traveling to the Big Island of Hawaii. Its beauty matches the peace and tranquility you feel when you arrive here. Picture beautiful lava rock formations surrounded by calm, crystal clear waters. Back in ancient Hawaiian times, this place was a place where people sought refuge from their enemies or if they broke the law. If they got here before their enemies all was forgiven and their life was spared. It was a place of second chances. My hubby and I had a chance to speak to Phyllis, who works as a park ranger there. She gave us a lot of information about the place and even gave us a mini tour since we missed her lecture.
The Place of Refuge is definitely a place where you can just sit atop the lava rock and stare out into the ocean and get lost in your thoughts. It is just so very peaceful, calm and relaxing here. There is also a little beach adjacent to here that is a popular place to snorkel. I even saw a couple fishing for octopus. Phyllis told us that pods of dolphins usually come around this area to nap. :)
Greenwell Farms:COFFEE & GREENWELL FAMILY HERITAGE
Nicholas GreenwellThe Greenwell Farms legacy began in 1850 when Henry Nicholas Greenwell left England and first set foot on the fertile soil of rural Kona.
Together with his wife, Elizabeth Caroline, Henry spent the next forty years farming, ranching and perfecting his Kona Coffee, soon exporting it to Europe and the Americas. In 1873, the President of the Kaiser's Exposition awarded the Greenwells a "Recognition Diploma" for their Kona Coffee at the World's Fair in Vienna, Austria.
MODERN COFFEE TIMES
Tom GreenwellToday, Greenwell Farms is situated in the heart of the Kona Coffee growing region (see map) adjacent to the ancestral home of Henry and Elizabeth, which is now occupied by the Kona Historical Society and Museum.
Managed by the descendants of Henry and Elizabeth, Greenwell Farms has evolved into a multi faceted Agribusiness:
The farming operation is located on the same farmland once cultivated by the Greenwell Family in the 1800's. Today Greenwell Farms employs modern farming practices to ensure consistent supply and the highest quality possible.
In addition to farming, the company purchases coffee cherry (just harvested) from over 300 farmers in the North and South Kona Regions. We operate our own pulping and drying facilities, dry mill and greenbean grading and storage facility.
A roasting plant is located on the farm to roast and package Greenwell Farms Coffee. The company ships green bean to the gourmet coffee industry around the world and over the years has established itself as the premiere source of Kona Coffee.
In Kona, the company provides custom milling, roasting and packaging for the Kona Coffee industry on the Big Island.
Our Farm Tour has become a very popular tourist stop along the Mamalahoa Highway.
From the growing, processing and roasting to the final cup, everything about the excellence that is Kona Coffee can be traced back to the high standards set so many years ago in 1850.
Swim with the Dolphins at Kealakekua Bay: Rent the kayak and swim with the dolphins !!!
This was most definitely the highlight of my trip, even more exciting than the manta ray night snorkel !!
The snorkeling itself over at the Captain Cook monument was just OK, there weren't nearly as many fish to see as there were at Kahalu'u Beach Park. My boyfriend and I only hung around the reef for about 15 minutes until heading back into the deep with the dolphins.
The dolphins were amazing. There were at least 20 of them hanging around the bay, swimming around in small groups. The water was so clear, we could see them diving deep into the water to feed on fish. Several times they would spring out of the water and do tricks for us. I definitely recommend driving down to the bay and renting a kayak ($60) from the locals.
How do you find which locals to rent from? Don't worry, they'll find you !! Immediately after parking, a local came up to us and asked if we were interested in renting a kayak for the day.
I would recommend everyone to rent the kayak and NOT do the hike ! Having the kayak allowed us to be comfortable going into the deeper water. Yeah it was nice to see the coral and fishes, but it was AMAZING to swim right next to dolphins. And please don't do the silly boat tour, just a waste of money !!
You'll want to go in early morning, we got there around 9. Remember to bring sun protection, because the sun was beating down on us hard ! Being out on the kayak in the ocean, there wasn't anywhere to head for shade.
Aloha Performing Arts Center:Construction of the Aloha Theatre as a silent movie house began in 1929, and was finished in 1932. The building withstood the fire of 1948, which burned the lower makai(ocean) side of Kainaliu. Movies changed from silent movies to talkies and the Aloha Theatre became a gathering place for the mauka(mountain) community.
Since 2003 the Aloha Theatre has been the home of the Kona Association for the Performing Arts(KAPA). Concerts, plays and performing arts are presented. The Aloha's long legacy of showing films continues and includes arthouse films, independent films and film festivals such as the Hawaiian International Film Festival.
