Introducing Gangnam-gu, Seoul
History of Development
In the Joseon Era, Gangnam-gu was part of the Gwangju-gun Daewang-myeon and Eonju-myeon areas of Gyeonggi-do. In 1963 following the expansion of the city of Seoul, it was absorbed into the city under the jurisdiction of the Seongdong-gu area. In 1975, the area separated from Seongdong-gu, and was established as its own 'gu', or division. The areas Gangdong-gu and Seocho-gu were then divided from Gangnam-gu in 1979 and 1988, respectively.
Location and Area
Gangnam-gu is located in the southeast of the capital, Seoul. The areas surrounding Gangnam-gu are Songpa-gu to the east, Seocho-gu to the west, Seongnam-si in Gyeonggi-do to the south, and Yongsan-gu, Seongdong-gu, and Gwangjin-gu to the north. Its name 'Gangnam' comes from its location south of the Hangang (River). Gangnam-gu is 39.51 square kilometers and makes up 6.5% of the total area of Seoul. It is comprised of 22 'dong', or towns.
Population
There are 564,197 people who reside in Gangnam-gu which make up 230,755 households (as of January 1, 2013). Of the population, there are 270,970 men, and 293,227 women, a difference in population of around 2,200, or 4%.
Road
Since 1968 Gangnam-gu has been systematically developed according to land readjustment enterprises with the foremost consideration of trasportation problems. This had led the centralization of all roads to have direct routes to Hannamdaegyo (Bridge), Yeongdongdaegyo (Bridge), Seongsudaegyo (Bridge) and Donghodaegyo (Bridge), and the Gangnam-daero, Yeongdong-daero, Olympic-daero, and Nambusunhwan-ro to be connected in cross sections making the roadways look like a chessboard.
Transportation
Since Gangnam-gu acts as a gateway connecting Seoul to Gyeonggi-do, public transportation such as bus routes and subways are highly developed. Specifically, all six subway lines are interconnected in Gangnam-gu. Beyond that, with the construction and expected completion of the second phase of subway Line 9, the Yeongdong/Dosan-daero extension from Wirye to Sinsa, and the Shinbundang Line (Railroad) of Gangnam-daero, it is anticipated that Gangnam-gu will take on the role of a transportation hub.
Housing
Besides mountainous areas like Guryongsan (Mountain) and Daemosan (Mountain) which are 200 to 300 meters above sea level, Gangnam-gu contains good land conditions for housing and roads. More than 60% of residents lease apartments in large high-rise apartment buildings, with the remaining population distributed evenly in upscale condominiums and expanded housing
Industry and Major Institutions
There is almost no presence of the manufacturing industry in Gangnam-gu, rather areas like Sinsa-dong, Nonhyeon-dong, and Yeoksam-dong around Gangnam-daero, Apgujeong-dong, and Teheran-ro's nearby Samseong-dong have developed into areas of commerce and especially in the medical and shopping industries. It is a common sight to see many foreign tourists in areas like Apgujeong-dong, Cheongdam-dong's Rodeo Street, and Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil which have many clinics for cosmetic surgery. Gangnam-gu also contains many prominent institutions such as the Kukkiwon, Korea Customs Service, KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), Korea International Trade Association, and COEX.
Popular Tourist Spots and Cultural Heritage Sites
Gangnam-gu boasts a dense IT industry in Teheran-ro and next to it, Kukkiwon, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Seolleung and Jeongneung (tombs of king from the Joseon Dynasty), Bongeunsa (a temple more than a thousand years old), Gwangpyeong Daegun Myoyeok , and many other cultural treasures.
Events and Festivals
Gangnam-gu holds the week long Gangnam Festival in early October. This festival goes beyond simple regional events and spreads the Korean Wave and fashion trends as a global event. Throughout the duration of the events one can see an array of items designed by famous designers and passionate entrepreneurs, enjoy the International Peace Marathon, and watch world famous K-POP performances.
COEX, well known for its shopping and cultural space, is the heart of international exchange among nations with various exhibitions and international seminars
COEX is the biggest convention center and exhibition space in Korea. Directly connected to the Samseong Station of subway line 2, it includes a shopping center, a movie theater, a musical concert hall, exhibition halls and famous restaurants. It is also close to a casino, hotels, department stores, and other various amenities.
COEX had held the G20 Conference in 2010 as well as the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit. Throughout the year COEX has been a prominent place for Asia's top exhibitions, cultural and tourism events. It also offers a chance to visit Korea's biggest marine theme park know as the Aquarium, where visitors can view more than 650 different kinds of aquatic life and have the opportunity to feed some of the sea life.
Because COEX hosts many diverse exhibits in its exhibition halls throughout the year, you're surely to find something interesting to see if you check out the daily exhibit program. Plus, with the concentration of sports, fashion, cosmetic and various other items for sale in the COEX Mall, the place is also widely known for shopping. There is also a large bookstore with domestic and international bestsellers and other international publications available.
COEX has it all. With so much culture, shopping, exhibits, and restaurants, you can spend all day at COEX and never run out of things to see and enjoy.
Bongeunsa Temple
If you need some healing and calming moments in the middle of Gangnam, Bongeunsa Temple will be the right solution for you
In a city block surrounded by the COEX and other tall buildings in Samseong-dong, Bongeunsa is a very peculiar site. It seems dubious to have a temple in the very midst of Gangnam, but this Buddhist temple has existed for countless years ever since it was built in 794 during Silla Dynasty, boasting the history of more than 1,200 years.
Erected in 1986 and completed ten years later, the giant statue of Buddha is one of the symbols of Bongeunsa Temple. Reaching 23 meters in height, the massive statue seems to look over all the inhabitants of the city.
With more than 10,000 devout believers and hundreds of foreign tourists visiting daily, Bongeunsa Temple runs "Temple Life" and "Temple Stay" programs for ordinary people to experience the life in the temple. Temple Life is a program that allows visitors a chance to stay and experience everyday life at the temple while teaching them traditional Korean Buddhist culture and mental training as well as lantern-making and Buddhist worship rites. On the fourth Saturday of every month, the Temple Stay program is carried out in English for the convenience of foreign visitors. It is the place to experience Eastern culture and take photos of beautiful wall paintings that will last a lifetime.
Enjoy your rest and relaxation in the heart of the bustling city! Whisk away your mental fatigue by meditation and hiking to Bongeunsa Temple.
Seonjeongneung (Royal Tomb)
You could have never expected to find a tomb in the midst of "Gangnam"
The royal tomb of Seonjeongneung, located within Samneung Park, is an uncommon sight in the middle of the city. Samneung Park was created around the tombs of the 9th King Seongjong and Queen Jeonghyeon, and their son, the 11th King Jungjong of Chosun Dynasty. Not only it is historically significant, but the beautiful park also offers tranquility apart from the rest of the noisy city.
The tombs of Jeonghyeon and Seolleung are lined in a row across from each other, whereas Jeongneung is sited alone apart from his parents, which makes it one of the few lone tombs in Chosun Dynasty. It was known that Jungjong had three queens and seven concubines, but after death he was buried alongside his poor widowed mother instead of his wives.
Seonjeongneung was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 30th. 2009. after being recognized for its historic value. King Seongjong spread his cultural policy based on the achievements of King Sejo and King Sejong, and put a lot of efforts on personnel appointments and various cultural developments; therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that the early system of civilization was completed during his reign. In addition, Gyeonggukdaejeon, a complete code of law, was compiled to proclaim that the country was a law-governed country.
King Seongjong is also famous due to the incidents with his wife, Disposed Queen Lady Yoon. She was notorious for her jealousy, and as a result, the King had to sentence her to death by poison. After that, Prince Yeonsan, the child of King Seongjong and Disposed Queen Lady Yoon, came to power and was the worst tyrant in Chosun Dynasty. Because of this tragedy, the stories related to King Seongjong are often used in novels, dramas, and movies. So, are you ready to dive into interesting stories of Seolleung in Chosun Dynasty, while exploring the harmonious nature trails in Samneung Park?
