Los nietos is a typical spanish fishing village where you can still come across fishermen sat repairing their nets - there are bars - restaurants - supermarkets - a small marina -  railway station and a bank.

 

Los nietos sits on the shores of the mar menor (minor sea) and is considered to be the world's largest swimming pool - due to its calm and warm waters which are rich in salts and iodine, and maintain a temperature that is never lower than 18c it is seperated from the mediterranean by a strip of land known as la manga with beautiful beaches.  The nature here is abundant with life - you can observe flamingos and other migratory birds in the las salinas nature park, to the north of la manga. There are numerous sailing schools -  diving clubs for the lovers of underwater activities. It is an area rich in historical history. And there are many musical festivals held during the year including the san javier jazz festival (june) the roman 10 day festival (sept) moors and christians (aug)the mardi gra (feb) and many more throughout the year winter and summer. The village offers a railway which connects to the surrounding villages including a local market in la union (tues).in august there is a flamenco festival which is performed over 7 days. The train also connects to the historic city of cartagena which is a bustling port with visits from cruise ships throughout the year.  There are museums - boat trips - and scenic bus tours. There are the usual famous name shops - gift shops - cafe bars -restaurants and much more.
