In Rabat`s Medina, near Sidi Fatah’s street – where the noble families used to live, rises Riad Salomé, my house, my haven of peace.
The name comes from this head of Salomé, signed A. Foretay, which I bought 10 years ago in a little fisherman’s village on the Moroccan coast.
As a matter of fact the word Salomé comes from Hebrew שלום, « Shalom », that means « peace ».
The house had been completely abandoned for more than 10 years but it still kept this aura of positive energy that fascinated me.
Together with local craftsmen, artists of their trade, we have entirely restored it.
During the years many families had inhabited the house building partition walls, kitchens on all the floors, apartments into already built apartments, had destroyed the mosaic floors, the wooden ceilings….
With a lot of patience and as meticulous as a goldsmiths we have researched, studied and finally brought back the house to its original splendor.
After four years of work and many concerns we succeeded in restoring in this ancestral home its original character without forgetting modern comfort. We have kept, where it was possible, the original mosaics, brought out the Sale’s stone, restored the wooden ceilings, stripped clean the thuja and cedar doors, recomposed mosaics where they had been destroyed….
Being a lover of plants and birds and wanting to respect the word “riad” which means garden in Arabic, I also filled the courtyard with plants and planted 4 enormous palm trees inspiring myself from the desert oasis and English gardening books.
In the coolness of this courtyard time takes a different form that takes you in a relaxing and meditative atmosphere which is difficult to forget.
The two rooms I am renting open on this beautiful courtyard, this place that – for Muslims – is a temporal representation of paradise.
