Casa del Hobo

The modern Cartagena is along the coast. Hundreds of glass condominium towers have sprung up on the Bocagrande Peninsula and nearby, a scene straight out of Miami or Panama City.

But in the old walled city, a Unesco World Heritage site, the narrow, cobblestone streets and shaded plazas with roving vendors selling tiny cups of coffee offer a somewhat romanticized image of the Spanish Caribbean that has long ceased to exist elsewhere.

The area has maintained strict building codes that have kept it more or less intact, even in the San Diego section of the city, one of the oldest parts of any city in the Americas.

From the 16th century through the end of the 18th century, when Cartagena was still a Spanish stronghold, the neighborhood was home to merchants, monks and other middle-class residents.

Today it is considered one of the most attractive areas of the historic district. And one of its houses — the Casa del Hobo.
The house is made primarily of brick, stone and wood; most of its interior walls are stucco.

On the ground level, the left side of the house is open, basically an interior courtyard. The right side includes a large living and dining area and a modern kitchen, as well as an elegant pool at the foot of a three-level coral stone wall that dates from the late 17th or early 18th century.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, while the top floor features a fourth bedroom and a large patio with a Jacuzzi, views over the clay tile roofs of the neighborhood and glimpses of the ocean.

In the past 10 years, demand has been strong for property in the old city, driving up prices.
