Route 12 Summary Mureung - Yongsu Olle Mureung Ecology School to Yongsu Pogu 17.5km (5~6hrs) Intorduction Is it the first Jeju Olle Trail route to connect all of Seogwipo-si along the coastlines up to Jeju-si. From Mureung 2-ri to the Jeolbuam in Yongsu Pogu(port), beautiful sceneries of fields, ocean and oreums(small inactive volcanos) continue throughout the trail. The horizon is hazy in the wide open fields, and the deep sea sways in a glitter of jade. The Doguri(a wide container made by sculpting stone or wood to be use as a feed bucket for cows or pigs) forms a mystic pond filled with sea water and seaweed.

The view of the tidal waves pouncing at these Doguris is magnificent. The stone workers that created the ‘Ilgangjeong Badang Olle Trail’ in route 7 reconstructed this path in front of the Sindo beach with the help of Seogwipo City. Pass through Suweol-bong(peak) and Eongal-gil, and climb over the dangsan-bong, all the time having a great view of Chagwi-do(island) to reach the 'Saengyi Gijeong Badang Gil (named by Jeju Olle Foundation, meaning ‘cliff with many birds’). You will have a unique experience of seagulls flying right under your nose, in this trail developed by Jeju Olle Foundation. Sightseeing Dowon Yeonmot(pond) It is a wetland located in Sindo-ri(Dowon-ri), where migratory birds come to spend the cold winters. Nongnam-bong(peak) It is an oreum(small inactive volcano) with a circular volcanic crater on top. The circular crater is lined with cedar fencing, with the crater basin comprised of citrus orchards and persimmon trees. It is stated that camphor tree once dominated this area. Sindo Badang Olle There are 4 Doguris of various sizes created by lava. A Doguri is a feed bucket made for pigs and cows, from wood or stone by sculpting it into a bowl-like shape. Fish and octopus carried from the tidal waves live in the Sindo Badang(Jeju dialect meaning sea) Doguri. Eongal-gil(pathway) A cliff cut towards the sea below the Suweol-bong(peak), Eongal means ‘below the big cliff’. It is comprised of vocanic tuff, and is used as a geologic education site because many strata are clearly visible. Dangsan-bong,

The original name is Dang Oreum(small inactive volcano). It is said that there used to be a shaman house that served a snake as a demigod, and the demigod was named Sagwi. Later on, Sagwi was mispronounced as Chagwi, hence the place was also called Chagwi Oreum. Saengyi Gijeong Badang Gil Saengyi means ‘bird’, Gijeong means ‘cliff’ and Badang means ‘sea’ in the Jeju dialect. The Sengi Gijeong Badang Gil is a seaside pathway where birds live on the cliffs. It is a paradise of winter migratory birds, including cormorants, herring gulls, and seagulls. Jagunae Pogu(port)

This charming, small port provides a fine photo opportunity; just off-shore is Chagwi-do(island) known for its good sports fishing while Dangsan-bong(peak) Seaside in Sindo Suwol-bong This parasitic volcanic cone, though only 77meters above mean sea-level, commands a superb view of southwestern Jeju Island; facing the sea to the north is the Chagwi group of Chagwi-do(island), Juk-do and Nun-seom(island) with Dangsan-bong(peak) rising immediately above the port. Facing in an easterly direction from Suwol-bong Mt.Halla-san, on a clear day, rises majestically -and to the southeast is Mt.Sanbang-san. The precipitous seaward cliff of Suwol-bong is called “Eongal”. The cliff is well known for the mineral springs that issue from its seaward face. These springs are called ‘Nokko’s Tears’. Legend tells us that once, long, long ago, Suwol and her brother Nok-ko climbed to the top to gather medicinal herbs for their widowed mother who was seriously ill. Suddenly, Suwol lost her footing, falling to her death on the rocky shore at the foot of the cliff. For 17days, Nok-ko cried in anguish for his lost sister -and the tears shed by Nok-ko are said to be the waters flowing from the face of the cliff. Even to this day, another name for Suwol-bong’s is Nokkomul Oreum(small inactive volcano). Chagwi-do This is the largest uninhabited island in Jeju Province, about 10-minute boat ride from Jagunae Pogu(port). This group is composed of Juk-do(island), Jisili-seom(island), Wa-do and some smaller islets.

The precipitous cliff and rocks of strange and grotesque shapes give good photo opportunities. The central part of Chagwi is flat. Trees, shrubs and herbs total 82 species. The immediately deep, unpolluted waters surrounding the group provide excellent shore angling. This islet group is well known for a type of squid locally harvested and sun/wind dried. Jeolbuam This gigantic rock memorializes the chastity of lady Ko, the wife of Gang, Sa-cheol. Legend says that in the later Joseon Dynasty(1392~1910), husband Sa-cheol, a bamboo-ware maker, went missing in heavy seas on his way home from bamboo collecting on Chagwi-do(island). After searching in vain for her lost husband, lady Ko, in utter despair, dressed in white mourning attire, hanged herself from the branch of a large nettle tree growing out over the small harbor. The next morning the village people found the husband’s body floating at the feet of Lady Ko hanging from the branch of the Nettle tree. Shin, Jae-woo, informed of this sad event, promised himself he would erect a proper memorial to this virtuous woman if he successfully passed the upcoming difficult State Examination. Failing on his first attempt, he visited a fortuneteller who told him that he would pass his second attempt if he, at all times, honored the woman’s spirit that always accompanied him. Inspired, Shin visited lady Ko’s grave and conducted a proper memorial service. At the next sitting, Shin was successful and was appointed the magistrate of Daejeong Township in which lady Ko’s grave was located. On taking office, Shin erected a monument in memory of this virtuous wide, re-interned her with her husband at a sunny, propitious spot on the west side of Dangsan-bong(peak), provided a memorial service for the couple, and ordered the village people of Gosan and Yongsu-ri to perform annual memorial services on the 15th day of the 3rd month of each yerar.

Magistrate shin also named this huge rock near where lady Ko hanged herself “Jeolbuam” which means ‘a chaste wife’. 109Seaside in Sindo ⓒ Kang, Kil-soon rises immediately to the east above the port. Suwol-bong is to the south. Down in the port area will often be found locally sun-dried squid for sale.
